Ferrets: The Guide to Success

Are you planning to have a ferret as a pet? Then you need to be prepared.

Caging

All ferrets need a cage, and quite a few supplies
inside it. The size recommended for a pair of
ferrets should be twenty inches long, forty
inches wide, and twenty inches deep, but it’s
best for a cage to be as big as it can.

Cages also need bedding…not the kind of bedding that
we sleep in. The bedding can not be wood shavings,
they contain essential oils which are bad for ferret
lungs.

Ferrets also need litter boxes in their cage.
If you don’t like the idea of a litter box, you
can always just change out the bedding once
a week.

Toys are optional, but ferrets do need a
lot of time to play. If you have a two leveled
cage, it’s probably best to have a tunnel
pipe down to the first floor. Ferrets adore
tunnels. It’s also nice to keep a few stuffed
animals in the cage as well, and your cage
Is complete!

Play Time

Ferrets need at least four hours out of
their cage, and two of the hours should
include a little play time. You can always
bring a few stuffed animals out of your
Ferrets cage, or have some that are
meant to be outside of the cage. If
your ferret is bored of stuffed animals
and tug of war, then just interact
without them!

Their “Business”

It’s no lie, ferrets poop a LOT! In fact,
they poop about ten times a day! You’re
going to have to get a litter box, and this
one has to be outside of the cage. If it
poops outside of the cage, there are
a few punishments. Such as…

  • Squirting your ferret with a Bitter Apple spray
  • Saying “No!” In a firm voice
  • Hold your ferret by the scruff
  • Don’t try to hit your ferret if it’s
  • bad, they’ll think it’s play time
  • and they will start playing

Food

Ferrets of course need food. You can
buy ferret feed at a local pet store, or
you can buy frozen mice. Ferrets also
eat: Scrambled eggs, chicken, beef and
lamb. Dry food is an important part of
a ferrets diet. It helps clean their teeth
and helps their digestive system.

Walks

Ferrets don’t need walks outside, but
it can help with the outside-the-cage
part. When you take your ferret on a
walk, you’ll need a harness and a
leash. There are usually a few predators
around the neighborhood, such as birds
and squirrels that you’ll need to protect
Your ferret from.

Veterinarian
When a ferret is out of it’s cage, it
might eat something it wasn’t supposed
to. Ferrets can easily get sick or have
diseases, so this could be bad. You’ll
Need to go to a veterinarian to care
for your ferret. This might cost a lot,
and that’s something to think about
before getting a ferret.

  Bathing

I don’t know about you, but I think
bathing tiny animals is a joy. To let
your ferret have a nice bath, you’ll
need the right supplies. Keep the
water level at a low hight so the ferret
doesn’t drown. You can buy ferret shampoo
at a local pet store to bathe your ferret in.
Have fun!

Teeth

Ferrets can get teeth diseases, so
(funnily enough,) you’ll have to brush
it’s teeth. Normal human toothbrushes
and toothpastes will not work out for your
ferret because this leads to sicknesses.
A small toothbrush and ferret toothpaste
can be bought to use. Now go get scrubbing!
